Western Sydney Airport opens to passengers on 25 October

The Australian Government has confirmed that Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport at Badgerys Creek opens to passenger flights on 25 October 2026. Freight flights started earlier, in late July 2026.

What the source says

The department’s announcement gives 25 October 2026 for passengers and 27 July 2026 for freight, with Jetstar flying the first passenger services, to the Gold Coast. The Minister’s linked media release explains the day’s difference: freight operations commenced on Sunday 26 July 2026, and Qantas Freight’s regular flights began the following evening, 27 July. Some other sites give 26 October for passengers; the departmental announcement says 25 October, which is the date used here.

The department describes WSI in its own words as a 24-hour, curfew-free airport. Its flight paths went live on 9 July 2026, ahead of passenger operations.

What it means for a household here

The travel maths changes, but not as dramatically as the round numbers suggest. Map routing over OpenStreetMap data, computed for this site on 30 August 2026, puts Western Sydney International about 34 km from Menangle Park Station — roughly 37 minutes in free-flow conditions. Sydney Airport is about 56 km and roughly 46 minutes free-flow by the same method. These are map estimates, not official travel times, and peak conditions are materially slower on both runs. The run from here goes up the Hume, then Narellan Road and The Northern Road — signalised arterial roads for most of the way. The toll-free M12 Motorway, open since 14 March 2026, serves the airport from the M7 side and is not on that route.

There is no direct bus from Menangle Park. Transport for NSW’s airport routes start from Campbelltown (route 845, via Oran Park), so the chain from here is two legs — a train to Campbelltown, then the 845 — or three if you start on the 889, which since 5 July 2026 stops short of Campbelltown Station. Transport for NSW also says access into the airport site itself is not available until the airport opens.

On noise: Menangle Park does not appear inside a published WSI noise contour, and the suburb is not named in the aircraft-noise chapter of the flight-path environmental impact statement. What to watch

Whether Transport for NSW adds or reworks services once passenger flights begin in late October, and whether anything is timetabled from the Macarthur side rather than only from Campbelltown. A realistic door-to-door time from Menangle Park can only be measured after the airport is operating.
