Schools and childcare: no public school yet, and where children go

Menangle Park has one school inside its boundary and it is a private one: Broughton Anglican College, an independent Anglican K-12 school at 81-83 Menangle Road. There is no public school in the suburb. The NSW Government has funded one; as at School Infrastructure NSW’s Planning update of June 2026 it was in design, planning approval had not yet been sought and no site address had been published. Until it opens, the public primary school your address is zoned to sits in another local government area, about 10 km by road, with no bus route between the two.

What exists in the suburb today

Two education and care services carry a Menangle Park address on the national StartingBlocks register: Broughton Anglican College’s outside school hours care service, and Bellbirds Early Learning Centre at 52 Taber St. Broughton itself is the only school.

Dahua Australia’s project page lists “on-site primary and childcare facilities”; it gives no delivery date for either. The school below is a NSW Government project, not a developer one, and no childcare centre inside the new estate is confirmed as approved or operating.

Which public schools you are zoned to now

For the 2026 calendar year, every part of Menangle Park sits in the Douglas Park Public School primary intake area. The secondary intake splits in two.

Those boundaries come from the catchment layer behind the Department of Education’s School Finder. Of 43 points sampled inside the suburb at about 500 metre spacing, all 43 returned Douglas Park Public School at primary level; at secondary level, 29 returned Mount Annan High and 14 Ambarvale High, the line between them running roughly north to south through the estate.

As the Department warns, a designated local school “may not always be the closest public school to your home”: Thomas Acres Public School at Ambarvale is 7.9 km by road, against 10.3 km to the school you are zoned to. That is a saving of about two and a half kilometres, not half the trip — a straight line on a map exaggerates the difference, because the run south to Douglas Park is almost all one road while the trip to Thomas Acres winds through Glen Alpine and Ambarvale streets. Both figures were measured on 31 August 2026 from the estate’s Menangle Road entrance at Beersheba Parade to each school’s published address, using the public OSRM routing engine over OpenStreetMap data. They are map estimates, not official figures.

The new public primary school

School Infrastructure NSW has announced a primary school with a co-located public early learning service, “located centrally in the precinct, near the future proposed Menangle Park town centre and future housing”. The published scope is 500 student places, 24 classrooms plus 3 support learning classrooms, the early learning service, a hall, a playing field and a sports court, master planned for future expansion. Funding sits inside the $9.2 billion for school infrastructure over four years in the 2026-27 NSW Budget, announced on 22 June 2026, of which $4.1 billion is for Western Sydney. No project-specific dollar figure has been published.

The June 2026 update states: “The new school will open to students for Day 1 Term 1 2029.” Read that as the Department’s stated target. At that update the project stood at: initial master plan complete, a Project Reference Group established, site due diligence starting “later in 2026”, and a community information session flagged for “later this year” — before planning approval is sought. No application was traceable on the NSW Planning Portal as at 30 August 2026.

No public high school has been announced for the precinct. Every NSW Government document found for Menangle Park refers to a primary school only.

Getting children there

Free travel: the School Student Transport Scheme

Transport for NSW gives free travel between home and school to students who live far enough from it. The thresholds:

• Kindergarten to Year 2: no minimum distance
• Years 3-6: 1.6 km straight line, or 2.3 km walking
• Years 7-12: 2 km straight line, or 2.9 km walking

The student must be a NSW resident and at least 4 years 6 months old; preschool children are not eligible. Inside those distances you can buy a discounted School Term Bus Pass instead.

Apply online through Transport for NSW. The form cannot be saved and resumed part-way, so have the home address, school and — importantly — the modes and specific operators the student will use ready before you start. A School Opal card then works for one forward and one return approved journey per school day, only on the named operators, and only between 6:30am and 7:00pm.

Students with disability who cannot travel under the scheme may be eligible for the Department of Education’s Assisted School Travel Program instead.

The primary school problem

There is no published bus route between Menangle Park and Douglas Park Public School. The school’s travel page says “Picton Buslines provide transport for our school”; Picton Buslines route 901, the only route with a stop there, reaches no further north than Douglas Park itself, and its other Campbelltown-facing route, 900, has Menangle Road stops that sit in Menangle 2568 in Wollondilly, not Menangle Park 2563.

The realistic link is the train. Douglas Park station is roughly 500 metres from the school, about a 10-minute run down the Southern Highlands Line. We are not printing specific school-run departures here: the timetable linked from Transport for NSW’s route page is stamped valid from 20 October 2024, and as at 30 August 2026 its Menangle Park times no longer match Transport for NSW’s trip planner. Build the trip in the trip planner on the day, and allow for the standing alert about temporary speed restrictions on this line.

The high school problem

Neither high school’s published timetable includes a Menangle Park stop. Ambarvale High School’s Transit Systems timetable — headed effective 31 May 2021, revised October 2023 — starts its morning services at Appin, Campbelltown, Macarthur Square, St Helens Park and Bradbury. Mount Annan High School’s, effective 30 November 2025, has no Campbelltown-side feeder at all; every morning service comes from Narellan or Camden, and the school’s website publishes no bus information.

In practice, both journeys mean interchanging at Macarthur. Route 889 — the only regular public bus route serving Menangle Park, on Transport for NSW’s route information checked on 30 August 2026, run by Transit Systems NSW SW, with stops at Menangle Park Station, Miracle Mile Bvd and Danehill Ave — reaches Macarthur Station at 08:03; route 891 then leaves Macarthur Square at 08:24 for Welling Drive, Mount Annan at 08:42. That is a connection read off two timetables, not a published through-service.

Route 889 also serves Broughton Anglican College’s Senior Learning Centre, on four weekday trips only: arriving 08:17, departing 07:52, arriving 15:23 and departing 14:58. Broughton publishes no transport page of its own.

Transport for NSW’s operator directory lists Transit Systems NSW SW on 02 8118 7102 — ring rather than follow links, because two operator websites listed there were broken or misdirected when tested on 30 August 2026. We have not dialled the number.

Enrolling out of area

Given the distances, many families will look at a school they are not zoned to. The Department’s position is specific: schools may accept enrolments from outside their designated area only if places are available, and “if the demand for local enrolment exceeds the number of places available, non-local enrolments will not be available.”

Where places are limited, the procedures require priority for students with additional learning and wellbeing needs, a sibling already at the school, or a co-located public preschool. Proximity, and safety and supervision before and after school, are optional criteria only — a long trip to your zoned school is not, by itself, an entitlement to a place elsewhere. You submit a separate non-local application and the receiving principal must notify your local school’s principal. An unsuccessful family can appeal to the principal, or to the Director Educational Leadership if the principal sat on the assessment panel.

Childcare and early learning

Bellbirds Early Learning Centre, 52 Taber St, is the only long day care service with a Menangle Park address on the national register — rated Meeting National Quality Standard in March 2025, operated by Warda Enterprises Pty Ltd. Broughton Anglican College OSHC provides before school, after school and vacation care on the college campus, rated Meeting National Quality Standard in April 2025.

Beyond that, families use centres in surrounding suburbs. Those on the register include Chipmunks in the Meadow at Rosemeadow (long day care and OSHC), Open Arms Early Education Centre at Ambarvale, St Helens Park World of Learning, Little Peoples Early Learning Centre at St Helens Park, Spring Farm Early Learning Centre — all rated Meeting National Quality Standard — and Children’s Village Spring Farm, not yet rated, with a last regulatory visit in May 2026.

The national register publishes more than ratings. Each service record also carries a vacancy section covering the week ahead, age group by age group, and a fee schedule with its own last-updated date. On 31 August 2026 Bellbirds showed general availability for the week but no vacancy in any of its four age-group tabs, at $185.00 for a full day session, last updated 16 July 2026. Chipmunks in the Meadow, the same day, showed permanent places Monday to Friday in all four age groups, at $149.75 — a fee last updated in January 2025. Read those dates as carefully as the numbers.

The figures are the services’ own, and the register’s note under them says to “contact the service to confirm age group and permanent/casual intake”. Where a service reports nothing, the section just says to contact it directly. So the register narrows the calls down; it does not hold a place. What no source publishes is how long a waiting list is. Ring each centre and ask, early — one long day care centre is a thin base for a growth precinct.
