Campbelltown City Council confirmed on 5 August 2026 that Campbelltown Arts Centre will be redeveloped at a cost of $84.6 million — $79 million from the NSW Government’s Western Sydney Infrastructure Grants Program and $5.6 million from Council’s own Local Infrastructure Plan.

What is proposed

The design is by fjcstudio under design director Richard Francis-Jones; concept designs were unveiled in December 2025. As reported, the rebuild delivers a new theatre space, new galleries, function facilities, extra workshop spaces, artist studios, a larger cafe, and the main entry reoriented back to Art Gallery Road.

Mayor Darcy Lound said the redevelopment “will create a world-class cultural destination that will inspire creativity, attract visitors, support artists”. That is the mayor’s description of the project.

NSW Planning’s exhibition notice says the build would support up to 70 construction jobs and create 12 new ongoing roles.

The dates that affect you

  • The current building at 1 Art Gallery Road closes in March 2027.
  • From April 2027 the centre operates from the ground floor of Campbelltown Library on Queen Street, with exhibitions, workshops and events continuing there and at satellite venues across the LGA.
  • Construction is due to start around April 2027, with completion scheduled for 2029. Planning materials say the upgraded centre is expected to open by mid-2029.

Those dates come from the NSW Government’s own announcement of the funding, not from a construction programme.

If you want to see the building as it stands, the 64th Fisher’s Ghost Art Award exhibition runs there from 26 September to 4 December 2026, well before the doors shut. Galleries and the shop are currently open daily 10am to 4pm and gallery entry is free.

The approval is the open question

The application is SSD-74509208, lodged as State Significant Development for 1 Art Gallery Road, Campbelltown. It went on public exhibition through the Planning Portal from 21 May 2026 with feedback due 17 June, and four submissions were lodged.

As at 21 September 2026, the register puts it at “Response to Submissions” — past exhibition, past the collation of submissions, and one stage short of determination. So it is not approved, and the search term for anyone who wants to follow it is the reference above. The record carries the environmental impact statement in 42 documents and seven pieces of agency advice.

Council announcing funding and a closure date is not the same thing as consent being granted. Both statuses are worth keeping apart.

Getting there

Queen Street Campbelltown is 8.47 km from the estate entrance, about 10 minutes off-peak, and the arts centre sits just off it on Art Gallery Road. There is an on-site car park, plus free timed parking nearby. By public transport it is a 10 to 20 minute walk from Campbelltown station via Hurley Street and Koshigaya Park, or bus route 894 from the station stops near Koshigaya Park.

What to watch

Whether the planning determination is published on the NSW Planning portal, and what Council announces for the temporary library programme from April 2027. Both would change what is actually open and when.
