The biggest trucks on the Hume have a proper place to pull up near us again. The Menangle Truck Parking Bay opened on Friday 19 December 2025, on the northbound side of the Hume Motorway at Menangle, opposite the Frank Partridge VC Rest Area between Menangle Road and Moreton Park Road — a few kilometres south of Menangle Park.

The bay is Transport for NSW's permanent replacement for the informal "Dustbowl" stopping area, which closed during construction of Spring Farm Parkway Stage 1, and for the temporary stop at Moolgun Creek. It is heavy vehicles only, designed for oversize-overmass loads up to 125 metres long and 8 metres wide, with a 300-metre deceleration lane in, a 575-metre acceleration lane out, and a 5,000 square metre parking area TfNSW says is comparable to the old Dustbowl. The agency estimates room for up to seven vehicles at once — a figure it stresses is indicative, based on how the Dustbowl was used. The build involved substantial earthworks and asphalting, drainage with a basin filtering site water before discharge, and safety barriers separating the bay from the motorway.

For Menangle Park residents the direct effect is modest — you can't use it, since it's for heavy vehicles only, not cars or caravans. But it ties off a piece of the $206 million Spring Farm Parkway Stage 1 project, the same works that closed the Dustbowl in the first place, and it fixes a real gap: oversize-overmass vehicles over 3.5 metres wide and 22 metres long may only travel through the NSW Urban Zone between 9:30pm and 5:30am, and until now drivers had limited options in and around the zone to stop and rest outside those hours. What's still open. The bay opened without toilets. After industry feedback, TfNSW committed to adding toilet facilities by early 2026, along with lighting and additional safety inclusions — we haven't been able to independently confirm the toilets are in, so check before relying on them. The nearest showers remain at the Ampol at Pheasants Nest, about 15 minutes south, and TfNSW itself notes there are only limited rest areas across the 180 kilometres between Pheasants Nest and Wyong.

What happens next. The same 10 December release invited tenders — closing 15 December 2025 — for the concept design of a purpose-built Western Sydney heavy vehicle rest area near Archbold and Old Wallgrove roads, part of an $80 million commitment funded jointly by the Australian and NSW governments. By March 2026, trade press was listing the Menangle bay among the rest area upgrades TfNSW had delivered over the past two years.
