Menangle Truck Parking Bay opens, replacing the Hume's 'Dustbowl'

The Menangle Truck Parking Bay opened on Friday 19 December 2025, on the northbound side of the Hume Motorway opposite the Frank Partridge VC Rest Area, between Menangle Road and Moreton Park Road.

What it is

Transport for NSW built it as the permanent replacement for the informal “Dustbowl” stopping area, which closed during construction of Spring Farm Parkway Stage 1, and for the temporary stop at Moolgun Creek.

It is heavy vehicles only. Transport for NSW designed it for oversize-overmass loads up to 125 metres long and 8 metres wide, with a 300-metre deceleration lane in, a 575-metre acceleration lane out, and a 5,000 square metre parking area the agency says is comparable to the old Dustbowl. Transport for NSW estimates room for up to seven vehicles at once, a figure it stresses is indicative and based on how the Dustbowl was used. The build involved earthworks and asphalting, drainage with a basin filtering site water before discharge, and safety barriers separating the bay from the motorway.

Why it was needed

Oversize-overmass vehicles over 3.5 metres wide and 22 metres long may only travel through the NSW Urban Zone between 9.30pm and 5.30am. Transport for NSW says drivers had limited options in and around the zone to stop and rest outside those hours.

The agency describes the bay as part of the $206 million Spring Farm Parkway Stage 1 project — the same works that closed the Dustbowl. Stage 1 itself opened to traffic in late August 2024 and gives Menangle Park its Hume Motorway interchange, though the ramps are city-facing only.

What it means for a household here

Very little directly. You cannot use it: it is for heavy vehicles, not cars or caravans. Getting around covers the roads residents actually use.

What is unresolved

The bay opened without toilets. Transport for NSW’s own notification says it “listened to industry feedback” and would be “adding toilet facilities by early 2026”; the lighting and further safety inclusions often reported alongside that come from trade coverage, not from the notification. As at 21 September 2026 the Transport for NSW pages this item cites did not confirm that the toilets are in, so drivers should check before relying on them. Transport for NSW says the nearest showers are at Pheasants Nest, and notes there are limited rest areas across the 180 kilometres between Pheasants Nest and Wyong.

What to watch

The same 10 December 2025 release invited tenders, closing 15 December 2025, for the concept design of a purpose-built Western Sydney heavy vehicle rest area near Archbold and Old Wallgrove roads — part of an $80 million commitment funded jointly by the Australian and NSW governments. By March 2026 trade press was listing the Menangle bay among the rest area upgrades Transport for NSW had delivered over the previous two years.
