The widening of Menangle Road — from Tindall Street in Campbelltown to Cummins Road at Menangle Park — is formally in the planning pipeline, as one of seven corridors funded under a $65 million South West Sydney Roads Planning program announced jointly by the Australian and NSW governments on 5 September 2025. The seven corridors across the Greater Macarthur and South West Growth areas add up to some 76.5 kilometres of road carrying more than 100,000 vehicles a day, and Transport for NSW will prepare business cases and planning investigations for them through to 2028.
For Menangle Park this is the road that matters most: it's the main way in and out of the suburb, and TfNSW describes the section as "an increasingly important local corridor". The stated aims of the upgrade are better traffic flow and less congestion, improved road safety, better connectivity, and support for sustainable and alternative ways to travel — familiar ground for anyone who reads our Getting around page.
Where it's actually up to: TfNSW's October 2025 project update says geotechnical and utility investigations were completed between December 2022 and March 2023, and that concept designs and environmental planning are the next step, funded through the $65 million program. Worth being clear-eyed about what this is: planning money, not construction money. There's no published design yet, no construction budget, no build date — and no confirmed length for the Menangle Road section itself.
Local MPs backed the move at the announcement. State Member for Campbelltown Greg Warren said the Menangle Road and Campbelltown Road upgrades are critical to keeping a rapidly growing city moving: "Planning now means safer, faster and more reliable travel for years to come." Federal Member for Macarthur Mike Freelander pointed to planning for the Hume Highway and Menangle Road as vital as the community grows, and also welcomed the start of planning for an Appin town centre bypass.
What happens next: business cases and planning investigations run through to 2028, and the program page — still live as of its June 2026 review — carries a September 2025 fact sheet and FAQs. Questions go to TfNSW on 1800 684 490 or projects@transport.nsw.gov.au. We'll update this story when concept designs for the Menangle Road section go public.
