Campbelltown re-elects Mayor Lound; Cr Masood Chowdhury becomes Deputy Mayor

Menangle Park sits in the Campbelltown City Council local government area, so who holds these two roles is who represents the suburb at the top of the council table.

What the minutes record

Cr Darcy Lound was re-elected Mayor at the extraordinary council meeting of 1 September 2026. Only one written nomination was received, so the Chief Executive Officer declared him elected without a vote, for the September 2026 to September 2028 term.

The Deputy Mayor’s election was contested. Two written nominations came in, for Cr Masood Chowdhury and Cr Seta Berbari, and Council first resolved — resolution 226/2026 — “that the term for Deputy Mayor be 12 months from September 2026 to September 2027”. So the twelve months is a resolution of Council, not merely a convention.

The ballot was by show of hands, Cr Chowdhury’s name read first in order of receipt. Nine of the fourteen councillors present voted for him: Crs Karen Hunt, Masood Chowdhury, Michael Oates, Aymen Rahman, Isabella Wisniewska, Jayden Rivera, Tao Triebels, Masud Khalil and Darcy Lound. The Chief Executive Officer declared a majority and declared Cr Chowdhury elected. The minutes record no separate count for Cr Berbari.

It is the first time Cr Chowdhury has held the role since he was elected to Council in 2016.

What to watch

The Deputy Mayor’s term ends in September 2027, so the name is worth re-checking then. The Mayor’s runs to the next local government elections in September 2028.
