Nepean River Reserve (Menangle Beach)
Riverside reserve · Parks, sport & things to do
Menangle Park's own stretch of the Nepean River, on Menangle Road. A Campbelltown City Council bushland reserve listed for birdwatching, bushwalking, canoeing and picnics - not for swimming - with a free monthly Bushcare group on the second Saturday of each month.
Campbelltown City Council describes this as a spacious bushland reserve that is great for birdwatching, and lists its features as bird watching, bushwalking, canoeing, parking, picnics, public toilets and seats.
Swimming is not on that list. Council uses the name Menangle Beach for a Bushcare site inside the reserve, and samples the water there, but it names Menangle Beach as one of four locations it is assessing to determine suitability for recreation. No Council source presents the reserve as a swimming spot, and Council’s general advice is to avoid swimming after heavy rain. Treat it as a place to walk, paddle a canoe and sit.
An Alcohol Free Zone applies to Menangle Road until 24 December 2029.
Council says the river and its banks have been affected by coal seam gas and sand mining, causing substantial erosion, and that revegetation is being used to stabilise them and stimulate natural regeneration, including of the threatened Pomaderris brunnea.
The Menangle Beach Bushcare group meets here on the second Saturday of each month, 9am to noon. It is free and no experience is needed, but register by emailing bushcare@campbelltown.nsw.gov.au before your first visit. Council advises long sleeves, long pants, enclosed sturdy shoes, a hat and water, and confirming with the team leader on 0409 757 143 the night before.
